Starlink Registered with SECP: Pakistan Moves Closer to Satellite Internet

Islamabad (Monitoring Desk): Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has confirmed that Starlink, the satellite internet company owned by Elon Musk, has officially registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

She stated that the Space Board Authority is currently reviewing technical aspects before granting operational approval. “We have communicated updates to Starlink, and a regulatory framework is being developed to allow Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services for all international companies,” Khawaja told Geo.tv.

Starlink Pakistan: Awaiting Final Approval

The registration of Starlink with SECP marks a significant step toward high-speed satellite internet in Pakistan. Elon Musk had earlier mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that Starlink is awaiting government clearance to begin operations in the country.

Officials have revealed that international consultants are assisting Pakistan in drafting a comprehensive policy for regulating non-jurisdictional and non-stationary LEO satellites. This will ensure fair competition and technological advancement in the telecom sector.

Boost for Internet Connectivity in Pakistan

In addition to Starlink’s progress, Pakistan is also set to benefit from the 2Africa Submarine Cable System, one of the world’s largest subsea projects.

This system, backed by global giants like Meta and Vodafone, aims to enhance internet speed, affordability, and reliability. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), through Transworld Associates, will manage the landing of this cable system in Pakistan.

What This Means for Digital Pakistan

  • Faster Internet: Starlink’s satellite service, once operational, could provide high-speed internet in underserved areas, especially rural regions.
  • Improved Connectivity: The 2Africa cable system will strengthen Pakistan’s backbone internet infrastructure.
  • Regulatory Framework: The new policy for LEO satellites will encourage more international companies to enter the Pakistani market.
